I can’t believe it’s been a year since we became homeowners! House Hunting was such a rough process for us. OK, it was mostly rough for me. I’m an indecisive person and I like to see ALL of my options before I make a decision. Unfortunately we were looking to buy in a seller’s market, so we had to make a decision on the houses we saw THE SAME DAY. Which is just crazy. But we survived and everything worked out really well.
And I love the house we chose even though we had to do an enormous amount of cosmetic work to it before we moved in. Painting was a huge project. But we finished it before moving day…all except for painting the office, that is. You see, I had a vision for the office. A few years ago I saw a painting “Rosie’s Tea Party” by Mark Ryden and I fell in love with the idea of a room with pink stripes.
And I thought it was a crazy idea until I brought it up to my husband (who worked at Sherwin Williams for a billion years) and he assured me that it was totally doable. So yeah, I was excited! I started researching pink stripes on Pinterest and found a combination of pink (Sweet Taffy) and an off-white color (Mayonnaise) that I thought would work perfectly together. So we had the colors matched in Sherwin Williams Super Paint Satin. And I was convinced that it was going to look amazing (because, you know, Pinterest doesn’t lie…)
But it didn’t look amazing at all.
The off-white color turned out to be way more yellow than I wanted it to be. It’s probably because the room doesn’t get enough light. I really tried to like it since it had a vintage feel to the color. But the rest of the house is a purple/pink color with white accents. So this color just didn’t seem to fit. And then Shade said “I love the pink and yellow stripes!” and I was convinced that we needed to change it. Kids are so honest.
I really didn’t want to pick out a different off-white color. So I went with my gut and just decided to do white. It took two coats of white to get rid of the pink and yellow and then we (by “we” I mean Jeremy. I was there to provide the music and moral support) got to work on the stripes.
So here we go!
First step: Decide on the size of the stripes you want to paint. We went with 10-inch stripes. So start at a corner and measure out 10 inches and then mark it. Jeremy used a pencil and put a line at the 10-inch mark. Then he put a “P” so he knew which side of the line would be painted pink. The next line should have a “P” on the right side of the line instead of the left. Continue doing that around the room.
Second step: After you’re totally done with marking off your 10-inch measurements. Use a laser level (we used this Stanley one from Home Depot) and line it up right over the line you drew with a pencil. Then tape it from the floor to the ceiling. Make sure you don’t tape over the “P” because the tape is supposed to go over the white stripes only. Not the area that will be painted pink.
This is what the room will look like when it’s totally taped off. The lines of tape that are closer together are part of the white stripes. And the lines with a wider gap are to be painted pink. Also, make sure you tape off the doorframes, baseboards, and anything else you don’t want paint on before you start painting!
Third step: It’s time to start painting! Cut in with pink paint at the ceiling, baseboards, corners, and around doorframes and windows. Make sure to only paint those taped off areas marked with a “P”!
Fourth step: Time to bring out the rollers and paint the rest of it! (I kind of miss my pixie cut by the way, hah!)
Last step: I was so excited to see the results! But unfortunately once it dried we realized the pink stripes would need another coat. So make sure you check before you remove the tape!
Painting pink stripes was a LOT more work than I thought it would be. Of course, most of that was work that I created. I should have just gone with white in the first place. But it all worked out really great in the end. Thanks to my amazing husband. And I’m so happy to finally have my pink striped office!
I mean, it’s definitely an upgrade from the brown room that it used to be! And we have so many more cosmetic renovations that we’d like to do in our house. Like replacing the carpet with wood flooring and getting brand new baseboards! I’m really looking forward to all the changes that we’ll make. Let me know if you guys have any questions!

The white definitely looks brighter & crisper, but sweet taffy & mayonnaise has to be one of the greatest color combo names I’ve ever heard!
Hahaha! I know, right. And Shade kept calling it “the Mayonnaise room” before we added the pink stripes. You can imagine how happy I was about that 😜
