Pastel Spotlight: Hilary From The Cutie Life

Happy first day of March! And welcome to a brand new category on my blog called Pastel Spotlight! I’ve met SO many awesome people in the past year that I’ve been blogging. So I thought it would be a lot of fun to feature one person per month to shine the Spotlight on them and their blog! I’m so excited about this!

I chose Hilary from The Cutie Life to be my first featured blogger! Hilary is an amazing person that I met through Instagram. I followed her because I realized we had similar tastes in fashion and I’m SO GLAD that I did. From there I discovered her blog and absolutely fell in love with it. Her categories and ideas are amazing. And I love her overall message of having fun, being real, and loving all things cute!

Hi Hilary! I’m thrilled to be shining the Pastel Spotlight on you today!
Thank you so much for having me!! I adore you and your blog and am so happy to be here!!

Thank you!! First of all, how long have you blogging and how did you come up with your blog name?
I started blogging about three or four years ago but it was more of a casual thing. At the time I was really in to lomography cameras and started my blog as a way to share my love for photography. After a while I realized that I wanted to write about more than just photography and expanded to chatting about my life. My blog was originally called Cutie Cameras because of my love for photography and camera collecting. I kept my blog name “Cutie Cameras” for a while and in 2015 I decided to switch it up. I wanted a name that would better incorporate my lifestyle and fashion focus. I chose The Cutie Life because I thought it better described my blog. The name initially started as a hashtag I started using and invited readers to use. I thought it would be a fun way for other people to share their cutie lives too! Then a friend said, “why isn’t that your blog name?” I immediately went and purchased the domain and here we are today!

You and I have such similar tastes in fashion! We both love novelty prints and purses! Can you share with us your top three outfits?
Yes we do!!! I would love to raid your closet! *wink* A favorite outfit… that is tricky!! I would have to say my top picks are…

This little black dress with a cutie collar!

I LOVE your section Try New Things! And I’m curious, is there something you tried that you thought you would hate, but ended up absolutely loving?
I am so glad you like my monthly feature! I was brainstorming post ideas and thought it would be interesting. Also, I tend to get stuck in my ways and I thought if I had a blog post every month that forced me to try something new that maybe I’d branch out more!

I was very surprised about my reaction to oysters. I honestly never thought in a million years I’d be alright with eating them. They are wiggly and weird. But, after trying them I have to say they aren’t so bad. If someone offered one to me I would totally eat it.

And what’s the worst thing that you’ve tried?
By far the worst thing was Vegemite. It was absolutely awful! I wanted to scrape my tongue afterward. Here is my advice, if someone offers you Vegemite slap it out of their hands and say, “no!”

You have such an amazing collection of vintage cameras! I just love them. This might be a hard one for you — out of your collection, which one is your absolute favorite and why?
My favorite cameras aren’t my favorites because they look super cool or because they are valuable but because they were gifts. One of my first vintage cameras was a Ansco box camera. My parents bought it for me along with some film. I love taking it out to snap photos. It feels so incredibly special.

Another gift from my parents is my Kodak Rainbow Pocket Camera. This one is a bit more valuable but I love it because my parents surprised me at my wedding with it. Each center piece was comprised of old books and a camera from my collection. On our head table my mom placed this beautiful little camera that I wanted for months. I nearly cried!

Tell us a little about your shop, Hilary’s Cutie Crafts. I just love the jewelry you have listed! What made you decide to start making jewelry and is it difficult to do?
I am so happy to hear you like my jewelry!! I’ve always loved making things. My mom was a big crafter and got me into it. I like that jewelry is basically wearable art. I can show off my hobby through a pair of earrings or a necklace.

I started my Etsy shop after making a ton of clay charms. I love making cute little food-themed charms but it got to the point where there was no way I could actually wear them all and enjoy them. So, I started an Etsy. I’ve only made a few sales BUT the fact that anyone would be interested in my work makes me feel very special.

I wouldn’t say it is difficult. It really just depends on what you want to make! When making clay charms I turned to YouTube videos for inspiration and ideas. They are super helpful!!

One last question! If you could own either a unicorn that bites or a dragon that snores, which one would you pick and why?
Easy! A unicorn that bites. A snoring dragon would get annoying. At least with a biting unicorn you could put it in a stable and stare at it. If you’re really quick you could maybe get close enough to get a velvet painting done of you with the little biting beast. So yeah, a unicorn 🙂
